Atrial natriuretic factor. Is it physiologically important?
نویسنده
چکیده
T he heart as an endocrine gland was unequivocally established with the ingenious experiments of DeBold and coworkers 1981 that demonstrated the existence of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF).1 These and subsequent studies have reported that ANF exists as a prepro-ANF molecule that is stored as a 126-amino-acid pro-ANF within atrial granules.2,3 In response to atrial stretch, pro-ANF is cleaved by a membrane-bound protease and released into the circulation as a 28-amino-acid peptide.4,5 Although hundreds of studies on ANF appear annually, the functional role of ANF in physiological regulation remains unclear. Based on studies that use exogenous administration of synthetic ANF, it is clear that pharmacological concentrations of ANF may decrease cardiac filling pressures and arterial pressure, increase sodium excretion, and inhibit activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.6,7 Despite such pharmacological actions, the role of ANF in the physiological regulation of the circulation remains controversial.

Debate Atrial Natriuretic Factor Plays a Significant Role in Body Fluid Homeostasis
Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) is a hormone with the physiological characteristics of a regulator of body fluid volume. It is potent, has a short duration of action, and responds to a physiologically relevant stimulus in a negative feedback-controlled system. It can act directly or indirectly (via inhibition of aldosterone biosynthesis) on the kidney to alter sodium transport and may regulate ...

متن کاملLung is an important source of atrial natriuretic factor in experimental cardiomyopathy.
The regulation of water and electrolyte homeostasis is multifactorial and includes the heart and kidneys as important regulatory centers. Within the heart, a recently discovered hormone, atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), has been implicated in the maintenance of water and salt balance. Primarily found in mammalian atria, ANF has been detected in low amounts in several tissues, including lungs. A...
متن کاملEvaluation of Serum Levels of N-terminal Pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide and Atrial Natriuretic Peptide in Neonates with Respiratory Distress
Background: Acute respiratory distress (ARD) is a critical respiratory failure due to lung injury of neonates leading to the clinical appearance of poor lung compliance. The aimed of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic values in differentiating respiratory from heart diseases with using of N-terminal pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) and Atrial natriuretic peptide(ANP) in neonates...
متن کاملAn update on the physiology of atrial natriuretic factor.
The atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) has pharmacological actions resulting in lower atrial and arterial pressures. Atrial distention stimulates ANF release, suggesting that ANF is an effector limb of a feedback loop for controlling cardiac filling pressure. To test this hypothesis it will be necessary to determine whether physiological atrial distention releases ANF in sufficient amounts to exer...
